The laid-back and friendly island of Trinidad offers some of the best wildlife experiences in region, with a wonderful mix of Caribbean and South America species on offer, as well as lovely beaches.
Trinidad is an island of contrasts, as well as great beauty. Its capital, Port of Spain comes alive each year with one of the world’s most colourful and exciting carnivals, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants offering tasty food and fantastic local beverages.
There’s another side to this beautiful laid-back island – forests and waterfalls, deserted beaches, hiking trails and stunning wildlife – scarlet ibis roost among the mangroves of Caroni Swamp, the bizarre nocturnal, fruit-eating oilbirds live in Dunston Caves of the Northern Range, while hummingbirds and a dazzling array of other Neotropical birds head an intoxicating cast of fauna and flora, from leatherback turtles and peccaries to golden tree frogs and orchids.
Sip rum punch, watch birds and nesting turtles, lie on a quiet tropical beach, or don a headdress and slide into Carnival – there’s plenty to occupy almost any taste here – or simply soak up some sun during the European winter.
