The incredible landscapes of Undara Volcanic National Park play host to a spectacular array of Australian species, while vast lava tubes provide intrigue for those with a passion for geology.

Located in Queensland’s hinterland, Undara Volcanic National Park is one of Australia’s most remarkable geological landscapes, shaped by a massive volcanic eruption around 190,000 years ago. The flowing lava from the volcano created an extensive system of lava tubes, formed when the outer layer of molten rock cooled, while liquid lava continued to move beneath. Once the eruption ended, the hollow tunnels, which are visible to this day, remained.

In turn, these caverns now provide a cool refuge from the surrounding tropical savannah, and have become a surprisingly fertile habitat for flora. The caves are considered some of the world’s most biodiverse, with as many as 52 resident species recorded living within them, including multiple species of microbats.

Above ground, dry rainforest has taken root across the basalt terrain, offering shelter for a diverse array of species including wallabies, kangaroos, countless reptiles and spectacular birdlife, such as Australian bustard and wedge-tailed eagles. Guided tours offer a chance to explore this unique diversity of wildlife, along with the park’s lava tubes, volcanic craters and open woodlands.
