Virpazar is the gateway to the Ramsar site of Lake Skadar National Park, home to over half of Europe’s bird species including Dalmatian pelican, squacco heron and the rare ferruginous duck.
There are two bird reserves in Lake Skadar, both of which are recognised as International Birding Areas, making this a birdwatcher’s paradise. The lake is an important location for migrating winter birds, and is a key a nesting site for the Dalmatian pelican. Other notable species include great crested grebes, kingfisher, great white heron, reed warblers and a quarter of the world’s population of pygmy cormorants.
The village of Virpazar is home to the Lake Skadar National Park Visitor Centre and the Besac Fortress, built by the Turks during the Ottoman Empire, the fortress has been recently reconstructed although some ruins remain, and provides wonderful views of the village and landscape.
