The beautiful Zemplen Hills in northeast Hungary are rich in Central European wildlife, including Ural owl, white-backed woodpecker, eastern imperial eagle, fire salamander and Bechstein’s bat.
These rugged, densely forested hills form part of the North Hungarian Mountains and are home to much of the country’s most sought wildlife. This is a land of black, middle-spotted and grey-headed woodpeckers, eastern pale and Berger’s clouded yellow butterflies, northern goshawk and the majestic golden eagle.
Old barns and other ancient buildings here house impressive summer roosts of bats. Accompanied by licensed experts it is possible to see a wonderful range of bats here, including alcathoe, whiskered, pygmy and Nathusius’ pipistrelles, Leisler’s, particoloured, western barbastelle and Schreiber’s bent-winged.
Other highlights here include medieval stone castles, perched on rock outcrops, such as the famous Sárospatak and Füzéri vár.
