Zuidhorn is a town in the north-eastern Netherlands near the city of Groningen. There’s a large park in the centre of the town, and a train connects Zuidhorn to Leeuwarden in Friesland.
Zuidhorn is close to Lauwersmeer National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage area of the Waddenzee, which enjoys an enviable reputation as a key site for seeing all kinds of waders.
Among the birds which breed in the area are Eurasian spoonbill, Montagu's harrier, white-tailed eagle, bearded tit and bluethroat. Hundreds of thousands of birds – including Eurasian wigeon, whooper swan and barnacle goose – spend the winter here.
The nearest city to Zuidhorn is Groningen, capital of the eponymous north-west Netherlands province.
