Travelling on this itinerary between July and October you should witness the wildebeest migration, as well as watch the fascinating chimpanzees made famous by the work of Jane Goodall.

You spend the first part of this Tanzania itinerary staying in a luxury mobile tented camp that has been strategically positioned in the best location to view the wildebeest migration, as well as the predators such as cheetah, lion, leopard and spotted hyena. After exploring the Serengeti, you fly by light aircraft to Gombe Stream National Park. In the company of an expert and experienced guide, you go chimp trekking and are likely to have incredible encounters with these amazing primates.

Suggested Itinerary

Today, you depart the UK on overnight international flights to Kilimanjaro (via Dubai).

  2. Day 2: Fly to the Serengeti

On arrival in Kilimanjaro, you met and transferred to Arusha to connect with a light aircraft flight to the Serengeti National Park which will provide wonderful views of the Great Rift Valley.

After touching down in the Serengeti, you are met at the airstrip and driven to your camp in this iconic wildlife-watching destination.

    Accommodation: Kirurumu Serengeti Camps, 4-nights

  3. Days 3-5 : Explore the Northern Serengeti

Over the course of the next three days, you explore the Northern Serengeti on game drives in your private vehicle. The majority of these outings will be in the early morning or late afternoon; however, there is also the possibility of a full-day drive with a picnic lunch in order to maximise your chance of watching wildlife.

You can head to the Mara River in hope of seeing one of the great spectacles of the migration: a river crossing. While witnessing a river crossing cannot be guaranteed, the chaos and frenzy surrounding such crossings make for an unforgettable, though hugely humbling, experience. Generally your expert guides will try to avoid the most congested areas and use their superior knowledge and many years of experience to locate spots that are less busy but still offer good chances of seeing a crossing. You return to camp for dinner in the evening.

Whilst a crossing is perhaps the outstanding highlight of this region of the Serengeti, there is a dazzling array of other wildlife to observe here, including lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, serval, spotted hyena, elephant and a range of spectacular birdlife.

  4. Day 6: Fly to Gombe Stream National Park

This morning you transfer back to the airstrip to board a light aircraft flight which will take you to the Gombe Stream National Park on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in Western Tanzania. On arrival in Gombe, you are met and driven to your accommodation which is located towards the northern end of the national park. The rest of the day is free to spend relaxing at the lodge.

Accommodation: Mbali Mbali Gombe Lodge, 3-nights

  5. Days 7-8 : Chimp trekking in Gombe Stream National Park

For the next two days you head out on walking excursions with your experienced and highly knowledgeable guide into Gombe Stream National Park in the hope of observing the famous chimps. Gombe is considered one of the best locations in the world to encounter these fascinating and captivating primates. Other wildlife that you might come across during these guided walks could include olive baboon, African fish eagle, palm-nut vulture and the exquisite red-tailed monkey.

Chimp trekking usually happens in the mornings, but afternoon walks are also available if you would like to maximise your time in the forest. Alternatively, there are other walking trails including a hike to the waterfalls at Kakombe which is an easy 30-minute walk. Snorkelling is also available from the lodge's private beach as well as kayaking or a boat safari.
