Founded in 1886 by Emperor Menelik II, Addis Ababa sits 2,500 metres above sea level in one of the highest parts of the Entoto mountain chain, and is the capital of Ethiopia.

In the Amharic language, Addis Ababa’s name means 'new flower'. The headquarters of the African UN is based in the city and for this reason, Addis is often thought of Africa’s political capital.

The fossilised skeleton of Lucy, the early hominid, is kept at the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis. Other highlights in the city include the art deco Parliament building which was built during the reign of Haile Selassie.

Gefersa Reservoir lies on the north-west edge of Addis Ababa and is a fine site for many of Ethiopia’s highland birds, including several national and regional endemics. Species we may see here include blue-winged goose, wattled ibis, Erlanger’s lark, tacazze sunbird, groundscraper thrush, Ethiopian siskin, moorland chat and red-breasted wheatear.
