Bled is a small town located on the shores of the spectacular Lake Bled in north-western Slovenia. Set amongst forested mountains and with clifftop castle it’s a beautiful place and Slovenia’s most popular tourist attraction.
Situated 30 miles from the capital, Ljubljana, close to the border with Austria, the mountain region of Bled became a tourist resort in the 19th century, when Swiss doctor Arnold Rikli discovered the beneficial properties of the water and pure air here.
Visitors can enjoy walks around the glacial lake, numerous restaurants, a visit to the clifftop castle and a boat trip to the lake’s island monastery. Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s largest protected area is only a short distance away and offers some excellent trekking and superb wildlife, including Alpine marmot, Alpine ibex and chamois.
