Bogotá is the vibrant and bustling capital city of Colombia, surrounded by Andean peaks and home to a wonderful mix of colonial buildings, museums and historic churches.

Bogotá was founded in 1538 by the conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada who had subdued the indigenous Muisca people in battle. The city's name is derived from the Muisca name for their major settlement, Bacatá, meaning Lady of the Andes.

The cultural centre of Bogotá is the cobbled downtown area, well worthy of exploration, from its historic convents and old houses to attractions such as the Plaza de Bolivar and, nearby, the sumptuous Cerro de Monserrate.

There’s plenty to suit all tastes here, from culture and museums to birding and gastronomy!
