Standing at around 2,500 metres above sea level, Gondar was Ethiopia’s capital between 1632 and 1855, and it remains one of the country’s richest areas in terms of history, culture and natural beauty.

The Castles of Gondar and palaces of the Royal Enclosure were built in the 16th and 17th centuries by a succession of kings. The city is a centre of religious importance for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and contains 44 churches, as well as monasteries, palaces and other buildings.
