Surrounded by the majestic snow-covered mountains of the Coast Range, which rise to 3,000 metres, these glacier-fed waters are abundant with krill and herring, making it one of the premier places to observe feeding humpback whales.

It's estimated that over half of the 1,000 humpback whales that migrate to Frederick Sound from Hawaii are visiting to feed on its super nutrient rich waters. Other marine animals seen here include orcas, Steller's sealions, Dall’s porpoise and harbour seals. Seabirds thrive in the sound and can be great indicators as to the location of humpbacks as they flock after the whale’s leftovers.

Frederick Sound is only accessible by boat or air.
