Cara Lodge is one of Georgetown’s best preserved wooden buildings, built in the 1840s. Oozing colonial charm and the nostalgia of a bygone era, it offers first-class service and a friendly atmosphere.
The historic property originally consisted of two houses and has a long and romantic history. It was the home of Georgetown’s first Lord Mayor, and over the years has attracted many dignitaries including King Edward VII who stayed in 1923. Other eminent guests include President Jimmy Carter, Prince Charles, Prince Andrew and Mick Jagger.
The 34 rooms reflect the traditional building-style of Guyana during the colonial era, with Demerara shutters and polished wooden floors, but feature an en suite bathroom and modern amenities that include individual climate control, IDD phones, cable television, minibar, tea and coffee-making facilities. hair dryer, iron and ironing board. Standard rooms come in two types: Gallery rooms vary in size and atmosphere, but all reflect the hotel’s Victorian elegance and charm; Verandah rooms are furnished with the finest locally-crafted wicker and kufa vine furniture, and open onto an ornate wooden verandah overlooking gardens.
Executive rooms offer a choice of king or queen beds, decorated in the warm colours of the Caribbean, again furnished with the finest kufa vine furniture and with complimentary internet access. These open onto a verandah of polished hardwood that overlooks the Mango Tree Patio, where an 80-year-old, 17-metre-tall tree provides shade from the tropical sun and an abundant supply of fruit for the hotel! There are also two suites: the Quamina and the Sir Walter Raleigh. The hotel’s Bottle Restaurant is highly regarded for its atmosphere and cuisine, and is one of the best in Georgetown; it uses fresh produce to create an international menu with a local flavour, and a patio bar serves snacks.
Cara Lodge is located in a quiet part of the city an hour’s drive from Cheddi Jagan International Airport and 15 minutes from Ogle Airport.
