Positioned on the banks of the perennially dry Mutlumuvi riverbed, Rhino Post Safari Lodge prides itself on providing its visitors with an authentic bush experience within the Kruger National Park.
The lodge takes up a fantastic location in the densely populated south-western section of the national park on a 12,000 hectare private concession, and enjoys special permissions to utilise the Kruger road network at night when self-drive visitors have to return to their camps, allowing guests to experience the magic of the park at night. The game viewing in this area is fantastic with the concession sharing a fenceless border with the prestigious Sabi Sands and Mala Mala Private Game Reserves, with wildlife granted unrestricted passage between these areas.
Rhino Post practices an eco-friendly approach which extends to game drives, with the property proudly practising a no off-road policy out of respect for the natural environment and with its long-term sustainability in mind. The guiding team ensure that this does not compromise on game viewing by having a fantastic understanding of the behaviours of the resident wildlife. For instance, in the winter months, animals take advantage of the warmth of the tarred roads and their proximity to water sources, which are more scarce at this time of year.
Rhino Post seamlessly blends into its natural surroundings whilst maintaining a contemporary look and feel, without compromising on authenticity. The property is set within a forest of riverine trees and maximises open spaces and is constructed from canvas, wood and glass as it looks to invite the outside in. An expansive wooden deck and boarded walkways connects the bar, lounge, reception, curio shop, boma and indoor and outdoor dining spaces, all of which possess enchanting views of the riverbed. An old elephant path leads to a secluded pool area set within the shade of trees with a view of a waterhole, providing the ideal place to refresh during the heat of the day.
The wooden walkways also link the main area to the eight thatched guest suites, with large glass windows and doors and each possessing their own outdoor showers and shaded private decks, to unwind on as wildlife passes by. The interiors are decorated in natural earthy tones with a modern safari elegance, and the en suite bathrooms are equipped with a double vanity unit and freestanding bath.
In keeping with the eco-conscious approach, the lodge runs on a generator during the day which is turned off after dinner; the suites have lights and fans powered overnight by individual batteries and inverters. Charging of personal devices such as cameras, mobile phones and laptops, in addition to hairdryer use, must take place while the generator is on, between the hours of 5am to approximately 10.30pm.
Activities consist of morning and afternoon game drives in the national park and walking safaris are offered by the property’s sister camp, Rhino Plains Camp, allowing guests to experience the smaller aspects of the bush that contribute to the greater ecosystem. A standout experience at the property is the option to partake in a night sleeping under the stars on one of the specially constructed sleep-out decks, which accommodates two people and overlooks a busy waterhole if booked in advance.
A range of in room massage treatments are also available to book at the lodge with at least 24 hours’ notice for guests looking to indulge. Skukuza golf course, often regarded as the ‘wildest golf course in the world’ due to regularly being frequented by animals from the Kruger National Park, is located nearby, and if guests are willing to forgo a game drive, they can play a round of 18 holes if booked in advance.
