Blue Morph Arctic Foxes of Iceland
The remote Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the far north-west of Iceland is the perfect place for an Arctic fox photo extravaganza. Tour leader Bret Charman gives an insight to this unique tour.
Any trip to the remote north-west of Iceland is an adventure. After a night in Reykjavík, we caught an internal flight to Ísafjörður where we would then catch a boat across to the peninsula. Kviar Lodge, our base for photographing the foxes in a winter wonderland, is a historic property full of character and the perfect place to warm up after spending a day in the freezing conditions.
The Arctic foxes found here are primarily of the blue morph variety, and their dark coats make them stand out in the white world around the lodge. You don’t have to go far to capture striking images of these beautiful and charismatic small mammals. On the first day we were treated to some strong winds and heavy snow and a very cooperative little fox – the photography was incredibly challenging but equally rewarding.
As we watched one of the resident foxes, another individual appeared in the distance and came running directly towards us. Within moments of arriving, the new fox came in fast and immediately asserted its dominance over the fox that had been with us all morning. The action was incredible and the photographs we were able to capture really were top drawer.
The weather in this part of the world is incredibly changeable, and so it can go from heavy snow and strong winds to bright sunshine. This change in the weather means that you can quickly build up a portfolio of different imagery. You can use the fjord’s waters or blue skies as a striking background for a very different feel and powerful image.
With the blue skies and vivid blue seas providing a different scene, the snow-covered slopes provide an entirely different backdrop. There is nothing better than finding an area of clean snow and having a fox search for food or pose in the perfectly white world around it.
