Fairytale Fjords, Orcas & Northern Lights

Far away, in the coastal landscapes of Northern Norway, orca pods are roaming the fjords, white-tailed eagles are spreading their colossal wings, and the calls of humpback whales are rising from the inky depths. Wildlife Photographer Sean Weekly invites you to marvel at the splendour of Norway’s wildlife on our new photography voyage.

If this sounds like the beginning of a fairytale, that’s because the wonders of Norway must be seen to be believed. This is exactly why we’ve launched our new Fjords, Orcas & Aurora Photography Expedition, and as a professional wildlife and astrophotographer I'm excited to lead this trip.

Orca in Norway On this awe-inspiring voyage aboard the exclusively chartered M/S Stockholm, we explore the Arctic waters in northern Norway, seeking out cetaceans and honing our photographic skills under my expert guidance. Limited to only 11 participants, and with two Zodiacs at our disposal, we can maximise our time in the field. The orcas and humpback whales we seek are drawn to these Norwegian fjords to prey on huge shoals of overwintering herring. Over recent years, they've become increasingly reliable, and where conditions allow, we make every effort to locate them and enjoy this magnificent spectacle. However, our wildlife interest isn't limited to the seas, with enormous white-tailed eagles often seen overhead, eager to enter the fray and snatch a fish or two for themselves.

As with any expedition, impromptu excursions aren't uncommon. Wildlife is unpredictable by nature, so when the whales arrive, we can be ready with our Zodiacs and our cameras to capture the action.

Whale tail in Norway When we're not out on wildlife excursions, we can enjoy sumptuous meals and inspiring wildlife presentations aboard our comfortable vessel. I will also deliver informal photography workshops and tutorials to help us master our craft and enhance our images. If, by night, we're fortunate enough to witness the aurora borealis, then my skills as an astrophotographer will really come into their own.

Northern lights in Norway We'll be sailing in the centre of the northern lights' oval, granting one of the highest possibilities of witnessing this natural phenomenon. The result of a cosmic reaction, the aurora borealis occurs when charged particles from the sun and the Earth’s magnetic field collide, producing vibrant, colourful bands of light in the Arctic night sky. Science aside, the visual spectacle is sure to create a unique sense of wonder and awe in even the most seasoned traveller.

Fjords and pink skies in Norway Throughout our tour, we hope to build an outstanding portfolio of Arctic and night sky imagery. The iconic wildlife and magnificent night skies will be our subjects, while the jawdropping scenery will provide an exquisite array of backdrops. By the time our voyage ends, the magic of Norway will be permanently captured in our hearts as well as our cameras.
