This pristine and spectacular wilderness is a fantastic location to observe humpbacks, orca and other cetaceans, while bears patrol the coastlines and icebergs calve from glaciers to share the seas with Steller's sea lion, sea otter and tufted puffin.
Most of these rugged and densely forested islands are part of the Tongass National Forest. From the forests to the shoreline, bears lumber in search of crustaceans, the abundance of wildlife continues in the surrounding coves, bays and sounds which harbour a rich and diverse marine life including sea otters, sea lions and gargantuan Steller’s sea lion.
This region of the Alaska Panhandle is a haven for humpback whales, which congregate each summer in staggering abundance to feed hungrily in the nutrient-rich waters, even demonstrating the spectacular bubble-net feeding phenomenon. Another cetacean highlight is the orca which similarly thrive in these seas.
The landscapes are spectacular, and include the LeConte glacier, which is extremely active, producing a large number of icebergs which decorate the fjord below.
Ketchikan on Revillagigedo Island and Sitka on Baranof Island are the largest towns on the islands.
