As well as the chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis, the main attraction of Batsfjord in winter is the mixed flock of Arctic eiders that inhabits the sheltered waters of the harbour.

The light conditions are usually superb in late winter in Batsfjord, and it is usually possible to see and photograph the mixed flock of eiders at close range, either from a series of floating pontoons or from the rocky shoreline. The birds are used to people wandering along the shore and can be very approachable.

In their finest breeding plumage at this time of year, the male eiders will be courting enthusiastically. Their displays are both visual and vocal – a mixed chorus of eiders is an unforgettable sound! Vying for attention will be long-tailed duck in good numbers, and, predictably in a fishing harbour, glaucous and Iceland gulls. Purple sandpiper, black-legged kittiwake and black guillemot complete the Arctic coastal picture.
