The city of Cali is a vibrant hub of Colombian culture where you're never far from an outstanding diversity of birdlife; you don’t even have to leave the city borders to experience it.
Situated at around 1,000 metres above sea level and surrounded by lush cloud forest, Cali is a lively city famed for its energetic festivals, music, and dancing — earning it the affectionate nickname “Capital of Salsa”. The Cali River runs through the city, while parks, green spaces and protected forests and wetlands make it an exciting place to explore.
Just beyond the city, a short drive brings you into rich cloud forest habitat, home to some of Colombia’s finest birdwatching sites. These offer a remarkable array of species, including a number of beautiful Colombian endemics. However, exceptional birding can be enjoyed within Cali itself, where more than 550 species have been recorded, many of which can be easily observed in parks and along the river. This extraordinary diversity makes Cali not only one of Colombia’s most biodiverse cities, but one of the richest urban birding destinations anywhere in the world.
