Dasyueshan Forest Recreation Area is one of the best birdwatching destinations in Taiwan and home to many of Taiwan’s endemic birdlife.

Birds found in this area include Taiwan partridge, Swinhoe’s pheasant, Taiwan yuhina, Rufous-faced warbler, Mikado pheasant, Taiwan cupwing, black and mountain eagle and crested honey buzzard. Mammals include Taiwan serow, red and white giant flying squirrel and Chinese ferret-badger.

This forested area ranges in altitude from 1,000 to 3,000 and Yakou Observatory offers the best views over the park, where on a clear day the peaks of Baigoudashan and Yushan – the Jade Mountain – can be seen.
