Erg Chebbi

Erg Chebbi is one of Morocco’s great Saharan landscapes, a sweeping expanse of windswept dunes, arid plains and seasonal waterbodies that support wildlife specially adapted to life in the desert.

Rising dramatically from the surrounding rocky desert, the dunes of Erg Chebbi form one of Morocco’s most striking landscapes. Wind continually reshapes the vast waves of sand, while hardy grasses and shrubs grow in more stable areas. Beyond the dunes, seasonal pools and wetlands can appear after rain, bringing unexpected bursts of life.

For those exploring the area, there’s much more here than the apparently empty desert suggests. The dunes provide habitat for elusive fennec foxes, jerboas, gerbils and specialised reptiles who are adapted to the extreme heat. When water is present, the surrounding seasonal wetlands can attract a surprising diversity of species such as greater flamingos, glossy ibis and black-winged stilt. Together, these habitats create a fascinating environment for wildlife.
