Situated to the north-east of Islay, Jura is an island in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides. Sparsely populated and mountainous, Jura is known for its single malt whisky and wildlife.

Eighth largest of the Scottish islands, Jura is one of the least densely populated areas of Scotland and largely mountainous, bare and covered in blanket bog.

Jura’s large population of red deer prevents the island’s natural woodland from growing. Grey seals are seen along the shores, and otters are also relatively common. Jura has been designated as a Special Protection Area for golden eagles, and it is a good place to see these superb raptors, along with white-tailed eagle, buzzards and hen harrier.

There is a strong Gaelic identity on the island, and it has featured in novels, poems and songs. George Orwell lived on the island and completed his novel Nineteen Eighty-Four here.
