The Mannar region in north-western Sri Lanka is a premier birdwatching destination, where rich coastal wetlands host spectacular concentrations of resident and migratory birds. The arid landscape also supports rusty-spotted cat and Indian courser.

The Mannar region, including Mannar Island, is a remarkable mosaic of lagoons, wetlands, salt pans, mangroves, sandbanks, offshore islands, grasslands, coastal scrub, and dry zone forest. This variety of habitat supports exceptional birdlife and is especially famous for its spectacular migratory species. Positioned at the end of the Central Asian Flyway, the area is believed to provide refuge for up to a million migratory birds, making winter its most dramatic season.

Each year, thousands of waders, waterfowl, and greater flamingos gather at the Mannar Salt Pans, creating one of the region’s most unforgettable wildlife spectacles. Their arrival coincides with a huge influx of other migrants travelling along the flyway, turning Mannar into a birdwatcher’s paradise from November to March. The landscape here is notably arid, supporting species such as the Indian courser, which is rarely seen elsewhere in Sri Lanka. Mammals also inhabit the region, including the rusty-spotted cat, grey slender loris, and golden jackal.

Beyond its natural wealth, Mannar offers a rich cultural and historical backdrop. For centuries it has been a crossroads of trade, migration, and cultural exchange, leaving behind a tapestry of traditions and faiths. Visitors can explore colourful Hindu temples, colonial era churches, and weathered fortifications that echo the region’s layered past.

Together, Mannar’s outstanding birdlife, coastal scenery, and cultural heritage make it one of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding and least-visited natural destinations.
