The area of Pusztaszer is protected and well-known for the wealth of birdlife found in this rich wetland, with around 180 species of bird found here, alongside a plethora of mammals.

Pusztaszer Landscape Protection Area is one of the largest landscape protection areas in Hungary. It has a diverse landscape architecture and comprises the eastern floodplain of Tisza and the former floodplain area beyond the embankments.

5,000 hectares of the area are Ramsar sites, and in addition to wetlands, the area consists of grasslands and croplands which serve as key stop-over points for migrating birds, particularly cranes and geese.
