Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is one of the world’s most bird-rich locations and home to numerous exciting endemics.
Some of the area’s endemics can be encountered with relative ease, including Santa Marta brush-finch, yellow-crowned whitestart, Santa Marta mountain-tanager and rusty-headed spinetail. Others are more furtive and trickier, such as Santa Marta sabrewing, Santa Marta parakeet, Santa Marta antpitta, Santa Marta foliage-gleaner and black-backed thornbill.
However, the endemics make up only part of the birding picture here. There are many more excellent birds such as black-chested jay, band-tailed guan, white-tipped quetzal, golden-breasted fruiteater, coppery emerald, rosy-thrush tanager, red-billed parrot, rusty-breasted antpitta, lined quail dove, black-fronted wood- quail, white-rumped hawk and grey-throated leaf-tosser. The San Lorenzo ridge is without question one of the finest birding locations in the world, and it is sure to be a highlight of any Colombian adventure.
