Skjervøy is a small municipality in northern Norway and has a population of just shy of 3,000 inhabitants. Traditionally a fishing port, Skjervøy is increasingly renowned for whale watching.

Despite its size Skjervøy has a rich heritage which dates back to the ancient Sami civilisation who settled here during the Stone Age. It is also home to the oldest wooden church in Nord-Halogaland diocese which was built in the early 1700s.

However, these days, thanks to its location, Skjervøy is becoming a whale watching destination. In recent years, herring have been overwintering in the coastal waters nearby and these shoals of fish attract both orca and humpback whales. Furthermore, due to its rugged and indented coastline, there are more sheltered bays and coves around, meaning whale watching can still be done in relatively bad weather.
