Although less than 100 kilometres from Sandakan, the sleepy village of Sukau in eastern Sabah is remote, tiny and a gateway for boat excursions down the Kinabatangan River.

Located on the Kinabatangan, Malaysia’s second longest river, Sukau is remote, small and peaceful – there are a couple of shops, a restaurant and three lodges. It’s laid-back, undeveloped and authentic, and the village is situated on the river, opposite riverside cliffs.

Sukau is surrounded by pristine forest, and the narrow road which leads to the village is lined by flowers and fruit trees. Birds to look out for include colourful hornbills, kingfishers and eagles, while there’s always a chance of macaques on the road leading to the village.
