The Burren is well known for its rock formations and relics of ancient civilisations, but it is best known for its unique and rich combination of Mediterranean and Arctic-Alpine flora.

In the Burren such gems as spring gentian, pyramidal bugle, fen violet and mountain avens are found together. The gullies between the limestone pavements harbour rare ferns, the wild shrubby potentilla is notable, and the whole area is an exciting plant-hunting ground.

In a limestone lough, there are stunted yew and hazel scrub – in late spring and summer, these are frequented by wood white butterflies.
