More than just an idyllic Indian Ocean beach destination, the diversity of aquatic and avian life in and around Vilanculos is extraordinary, pristine, and just waiting to be explored.
Vilanculos wildlife
While the white sands and tranquil turquoise seas of Vilanculos speak for themselves, from a wildlife perspective there's great birding to be had, but it's really the marine opportunities that eclipse terrestrial wildlife viewing here. Take to the seas for an underwater extravaganza viewing thousands of tropical fish species, alongside sharks, rays and more, as you snorkel or dive mile after mile of pristine coral reef. Resident bottlenose, spinner and humpback dolphins may join you as you skim across the water to the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine National Park offshore, keeping a vigil for ever elusive dugongs that take sanctuary here. Migrating humpback whales can be seen between July and November and during the green season, whale sharks and manta rays gather from October and April as up to five species of turtle nest between November to March.
