Wasgamuwa National Park has a diverse ecosystem, home to a significant population of elephants and many resident and migratory bird species. It is a relatively quiet park, offering intimate wildlife sightings.

Covering roughly 35,000 hectares, Wasgamuwa stands out as one of Sri Lanka’s most unspoiled wildlife areas, remaining far quieter than many other national parks. Its landscape is dominated by dry monsoon forest, home to remarkable bird diversity, including species such as the yellow‑fronted barbet, Sri Lanka green pigeon, red‑faced malkoha, and grey‑bellied cuckoo. The forest also supports good numbers of sloth bears and leopards, though both tend to be elusive.

In the park’s grasslands and wetlands, elephants are frequently encountered, often in impressive numbers and with very few other visitors around. These open habitats also support spotted deer, sambar deer, wild boar, and golden jackals, along with abundant birdlife such as painted, woolly‑necked, Asian openbill and lesser adjutant storks, as well as kingfishers, oriental darters, pheasant‑tailed jacanas, and grey‑headed fish eagles.
