Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, on the northern boundary of the state of Kerala, is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve which embraces many of South India’s most important protected areas.
Designated under Project Tiger in 1973, the sanctuary shares a border with Bandipur (in the state of Karnataka) to the north and Mudumalai (in Tamil Nadu) to the east. Together the humid and deciduous forests of these reserves support many of India’s classic mammals, including large herds of Asian elephants, packs of wild dogs, leopards, sloth bears, stripe-necked and ruddy mongooses, gaur and a globally important population of tigers. More humid than the large protected areas of Nagarhole and Bandipur to the north, Wayanad holds many species typical of India’s southern rainforest including Malabar trogon, Malabar pied hornbill, Malabar grey hornbill, king cobra, Nilgiri langur and brown palm-civet.
Ideal for viewing: Malabar trogon, Malabar parakeet, Malabar grey hornbill, Nilgiri langur, brown palm-civet
