Brisbane combines an easy city stay with access to the forests, wetlands, mountains and national parks of south-east Queensland, making it an excellent gateway for wildlife-focused journeys.
Beyond Brisbane’s riverfront and cultural precincts, wild Queensland is surprisingly close. The city makes a practical starting point for journeys into the Scenic Rim and the World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests, where subtropical forest, mountain ridges and waterfalls provide habitat for a rich variety of birds and mammals.
Closer to the city, bushland, wetlands and coastal environments offer opportunities to look for koalas, eastern grey kangaroos, wallabies, flying-foxes and colourful birdlife. From Brisbane it's also easy to continue north towards the Glass House Mountains, the Kondalilla National Park, Sunshine Coast and Noosa, or further into Queensland’s Nature Coast.
The blend of excellent transport links and quick access to natural landscapes makes Brisbane particularly useful as the gateway to a wider wildlife itinerary rather than simply an urban stopover.
