Johannesburg is more than just a gateway city, enjoy its café culture, parks and thriving arts scene whilst visiting sites of historical significance commemorating apartheid to anthropology.

Look beyond Johannesburg's fancy hotels, restaurants, bars, shopping malls and entertainment offerings, and you’ll discover there is more to this dynamic city than meets the eye. Seek to understand South Africa’s segregated past with visits to Constitution Hill, Soweto and the infinitely moving Apartheid Museum. Discover regenerated areas on walking and street food tours, go birding in Delta Park, or indeed further afield, at the lovely Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. A visit in October would be especially lovely as it's jacaranda season and everything is carpeted in purple blossom. Anthropologists should head to the Cradle of Humankind and, for a Big Five fix, visit any number of private game reserves that are within a few hours of the city.
