Kweene Trails is a truly unique Okavango expedition experience exploring one of Botswana’s last remaining remote wilderness areas, and offers the perfect combination of authenticity, adventure and simplistic luxury.
Only accessible by helicopter, the trail visits two almost identical sister camps, Kweene River Camp and Magwegwe, usually with a walking transfer between the camps during the middle of your itinerary, if conditions permit. When water levels are high, the transfer will often include travelling by mokoro or vehicle as well as on foot. Moving days are a full day of exploration, with a delicious packed lunch followed by a rest during the heat of the day, all while your back-up team moves and sets up camp awaiting your arrival in the late afternoon.
Both camps are situated along the Kweene River system and are surrounded by wildlife in a private 30,000 hectare area within the Abu Concession, where no other camps are present. Activities are carefully curated to ensure guests staying at one never cross paths with those staying at the other, providing the ultimate exclusive experience.
Kweene River Camp is nestled amongst the trees in an area of occasional swamp habitat, with an arid feel that attracts a wealth of game to the grassy floodplains, and numerous predators in tow. Further north in an area of seasonal swamp habitat lies Magwegwe Camp, where the landscape consists of endless floodplains, well-wooded islands and permanent surface water, drawing in a plethora of wildlife.
Each property comprises five simple yet elegant Meru style en suite safari tents, featuring comfy beds with crisp Egyptian cotton linen, USB and USB-C charging facilities, ceiling fan, a hanging canvas wardrobe and luggage rack, and a private deck with directors chairs overlooking the surrounding waterways where wildlife often passes by. The rooms are kept cool throughout the day due to their shady location, offering the perfect relief during the midday sun.
The open-air bathrooms have no running water, however consist of rustic amenities such as a refillable warm jug for face washing, hand wash station and drinking water, each topped up daily by staff (or on request). Bucket showers offer an adventurous bathing experience with the water heated over fire, and refuse is disposed of in a compost toilet, emptied daily. Both camps also feature a mess tent where meals are served and cameras can be charged, along with a comfortable lounge area, coffee station and campfire.
Activities consist of explorative game drives, walking safaris and mokoro excursions, with the goal of maximising sightings, sometimes utilising more than one of these methods in a single morning or afternoon.
