Spanning north Slovakia and south Poland, the Pieniny Mountains reach 982m at their peak and are composed of limestone and dolomite and characterised by deep ravines and gorges and scenic forested slopes.
There are about 60 species of mammal living in the Pieniny Mountains, including numerous small rodents and 17 species of bat – on the Slovak side, endangered bats include Geoffroy’s and greater horseshoe, while the Polish side is home to populations of lesser horseshoe bats.
Among the interesting birdlife in Pieniny are wallcreepers which nest on limestone cliffs in the park, while pygmy owl, ringed plover, and peregrine are also found here.
With wide, fast-flowing rivers, deep ravines and forested peaks, the Pieniny Mountains boasts some of the most beautiful scenery in north-eastern Europe. The River Dunajec which flows through the Pieniny range is popular with rafters, while the mountains attract hikers and nature lovers. However, this is still an unspoiled part of Europe, and most of the visitors are from Poland and Slovakia!
