Simply superb brown bear viewing and the chance to improve your nature photography skills await in south-east Alaska’s back country at the remote and spectacular Lake Clark National Park.

Up close and personal brown bear viewing is the focus on this sensational wildlife photography tour to Lake Clark National Park. Between May and August, bears feast on nature’s bounty with the salmon run being arguably North America’s most spectacular wildlife extravaganza.

The bears are our main focus of this immersive brown bear photography tour in true wilderness, and we ensure incredible photographic opportunities are captured in a portfolio of compelling images. From around the camp, at the private viewing platforms and on foot excursions into the adjacent Lake Clark National Park, we enjoy intimate encounters with the bears.

Typical Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrive Homer

On arrival in Homer, transfer to your overnight accommodation for a welcome dinner. Explore the town beforehand (time permitting), searching the spit for bald eagles, sea otters, other marine mammals and a plethora of bird life.

    Accommodation: Land’s End Resort, 1-night

  2. Day 2: Fly into camp & afternoon of bear photography

The adventure begins this morning as you depart Homer on a scenic charter flight to your exclusive camp. This is more than just a transfer as it gives you the opportunity to take in spectacular views of snow-clad volcanoes and jagged glaciers, tundra, meadows and forests en route, introducing you to the pristine wild bear country which you're soon to explore.

This afternoon, your private group commences their first bear watching excursion, spending time with these amazing creatures in their natural habitat and recording bear activity on camera.

    Accommodation: Alaska Bear Camp, 4-nights

  3. Days 3-5 : Bear photography

The focus throughout your time here is photographing bears. Coastal brown bears are substantially larger than their inland grizzly bear cousins (yet are the same species) and black bears are here too, although they're rarely seen. Intimate, personal encounters are the aim of the game as you photograph bears with the assistance of naturalist photographers on hand to develop your skills and help you capture those special moments.

Bear behaviour changes as the season develops. In May – June, cubs play alongside their mother whilst feeding on sedge grasses and learning to dig for clams. Mating begins in June and by July into early August, all attention turns to the sockeye and king salmon run. Brown bears gather to gorge on this natural phenomenon, putting on precious weight to see them through the winter. We have the opportunity to photograph bears in various behaviours as they chase salmon and interact with one another.

Amazing views and other wildlife such as sea otters, bald eagles and more will try to distract you, but brown bears are the name of the game! Every evening, return to camp and replay encounters over delicious meals prepared by the camp chef with fresh, local produce before falling asleep in complete and utter, profound silence.

  4. Day 6: Morning bear photography & afternoon flight

Weather depending, you have the chance to search for bears one last time this morning before your charter flight whisks you over soaring peaks, icefields and coastal forests back to Homer. There, after lunch, you're free to explore the town once again before a farewell dinner.

    Accommodation: Land’s End Resort, 1-night

  5. Day 7: Depart Homer

Bid farewell to your fellow travellers as you depart Homer, having spent precious time in the company of magnificent creatures over the last week, and having banked a lifetime of memories.
