Enjoy the abundance of iconic wildlife and outstanding photographic opportunities that make the Okavango Delta such a paradise for nature lovers. Led by wildlife photographer Emma Healey this 10-day tour visits a beautiful lodge in a wildlife hotspot.
When it comes to naming the world’s greatest wildlife destination, the Okavango Delta is hard to beat. Even among all the great national parks across Africa, the Delta is legendary.
Being one of the most remote wilderness areas on the continent, a safari in the Okavango Delta can be an adventure, but the reward is one of the most intimate and exciting wildlife experiences you can have. For this photo safari, we slow the pace to enjoy a relaxed, single-centre holiday, with our base at the wonderful Pom Pom Camp. Here we can enjoy wildlife safaris and mokoro (canoe) trips through some of the most beautiful landscapes the Delta has to offer, seeing and photographing its spectacular African wildlife during the diverse green season.
At this time of year, the open grasslands and marshes are lush and often cloaked in early morning mists, creating beautiful backdrops from which to enjoy some creative photography.
On this tour, we have the opportunity to drive both during the day and at night in search of the leopards, lions, cheetahs and wild dogs that all frequent the area, with fantastic chances to indulge in big cat photography, search for rare mammals and enjoy the birds of the Okavango Delta.

Typical Itinerary
Day1: Depart UK
Day2: Transfer to the Okavango Delta
On arrival in Johannesburg, we connect with our onward flight to Maun. On arrival in Maun, we take a light aircraft flight into the Okavango Delta, and during our flight, we enjoy a fantastic aerial perspective of the environment as we look down upon herds of elephant and impala around watering holes and perhaps spot hippos submerged in the water. Depending on our arrival at camp, we may have time for our first safari.
Accommodation: Pom Pom Camp, 6-nights
Days3-8: Photo safaris in the Okavango Delta
Throughout our 7-night stay at the comfortable Pom Pom Camp, we have the flexibility and luxury of going off-road in search of the best sightings, lighting and experiences.
Our daily programme usually starts with an early morning safari where the light is often golden, and low-lying mists sometimes cling to the air to create a serene backdrop to the wildlife activity. We then have time in the middle of the day for relaxation, editing, photography of macro subjects, birdwatching or simply enjoying the bush television at the waterhole in front of the lodge. After afternoon high tea, we set out again for late afternoon and evening safari, with the option for night drives too.
Being in the heart of the delta, there are a few channels here that are great for short mokoro trips, offering eye-level views of bathing elephants, crocodiles and the delta’s abundant lechwe and waterbirds, including the jewel-like malachite kingfisher, bee-eaters, fish eagles, egrets, jacanas, storks and other wetland birdlife.
The diversity of habitats within reach of the lodge provides a fantastic variety of wildlife - both lion and leopard occur at high densities here and are regular sightings on game drives, and spotted hyena, African wild dog and side-striped jackal all frequent the area. Elephant, hippo, giraffe, zebra, impala, greater kudu, red lechwe, hartebeest, wildebeest, reedbuck and bushbuck are all common too, along with smaller species such as baboons, vervet monkeys, warthogs and families of dwarf mongooses. Nocturnal species such as serval, African wildcat, honey badger, lesser bushbaby and African civet are all possibilities on night drives.
Day9: Depart Botswana
Today we enjoy our final morning and a last chance to relax around the lodge, before we take our light aircraft flight back to Maun and connect with our flight to Johannesburg and on to the UK.
Day10: Arrive UK
Please note: With the emphasis on watching wildlife from vehicles and occasionally mokoro boats, any walking is always at a slow to moderate pace and mostly just around the lodge.
