Guided Self-driving in Africa's Wilderness
Namibia may just be the perfect destination for a wildlife holiday. Here, Director Nick Joynes explains why this remote country ticks all the boxes for an exceptional adventure.
We have all been dreaming of destinations to escape to, and whilst there are many countries to choose from, Namibia’s combination of vast open spaces, stunning landscapes, remote wilderness, warm climate and superb wildlife should place the country firmly at the top of your list.
Namibia’s remarkable scenery, luxurious lodges, resplendent night skies and desert-adapted wildlife provided more than enough reason to visit this amazing country, but now Namibia’s appeal is even greater. Being one of the least densely populated countries in the world, in many areas you may well find that (apart from the flora and fauna around you) you are the only living soul for many miles around.
We are expanding our programme of wildlife holidays to Namibia and are excited to launch a trip with a unique concept – a guided self-drive tour. One of the best ways to explore and experience Namibia is to self-drive in your own 4-wheel drive vehicle so we have designed a tour which allows you to experience the joy of self-driving and combine this with the services of an expert local guide. A guide will accompany the group throughout in a lead vehicle and will not only locate wildlife and highlight points of interest, but also be on hand to help navigate Namibia’s dirt roads by communicating with on-board radios. The guide will be able to advise which gear to be in, the best route around any potential obstacles and any other information which will really enhance the holiday experience.
This itinerary includes the must-see locations of Etosha National Park and the Namib Desert, but the country has an abundance of other remarkable locations and wildlife to experience. Searching for desert-adapted elephants, brown hyena, the critically endangered desert lions of the Skeleton Coast or tracking the only free-roaming population of black rhino in ‘Kaokoland’, provide thrilling wildlife encounters in this rugged hinterland.
Witnessing the coastal wildlife, such as the gigantic Cape fur seal colony at Cape Cross, the enormous population of lesser and greater flamingos in Walvis Bay, or spotting pods of Heaviside’s and Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in the offshore waters are equally unforgettable. Plus, Namibia is a mecca for birdwatching, especially in the Erongo Mountains or throughout the Caprivi Strip, where over 480 species have been identified.
So, there you have it! If you are craving an encounter with fantastic wildlife, in a place with awe-inspiring landscapes then booking a place on one of our fully-guided small group tours to Namibia is all you need to do …
