Famous as home of the Aran sweater, the Aran Islands lie just off Galway and Doolin, are a centre of Gaelic culture and heritage, and are a beautiful and scenic place to visit.

The Aran Islands are composed of limestone, and have many of the same plants as the Burren, however the unique landscape of tiny, gateless fields with high stone walls seems lost much further back in time.

Inishmore, the largest of the islands, has some excellent limestone flora, and an astonishing prehistoric semi-circular stone fort – Dun Aengus.

Birds on the Aran Islands include red-billed choughs and numerous cuckoos, while flower-rich paddocks support colonies of rare marsh fritillary butterflies. However, the real charm of the islands lies principally in their remoteness and lack of traffic.
