Varangerfjord has a truly Arctic feel. It is akin to a small corner of Siberia on the fringe of Europe, a superb place for seeing sea-ducks and, as there’s little light pollution, the Aurora Borealis.

Colourful villages and small towns dot Varangerfjord’s shoreline, which initially has a light covering of birch woods. However, as you drive progressively eastwards these become thinner and the coast becomes increasingly barren.

Vardø lies at the eastern end of the fjord, and is an ideal place to stay, and for birdwatching. If the skies are clear, one of the advantages of being in Varangerfjord in late winter is the opportunity to get superb views of the Northern Lights.
