Chris Breen bears the Festival Blanket

The Great Bear Rainforest

We have just returned from the wilderness wildlife extravaganza of The Great Bear Rainforest - the temperate west coast of British Columbia in Canada, and home of the illusive Spirit Bear. This was the location for the 4th annual Festival of Wildlife - what a location! Thirty customers were joined by local wildlife conservationalists, First Nations guides, photography experts, artists, zoologists and members of Wildlife Worldwide for a wildlife feast beyond compare.

Our party was also extremely fortunate and proud to have attended a First Nation Feast with the local community of Hartley Bay and generously hosted by King Pacific Lodge. We enjoyed First Nation music, clan dancing, delicious food and above all exquisite hospitality.

Spirit Bear

Bear Facts

The Tsimshian peoples legend of the Moksgm'ol - the Spirit Bear

"Long ago, when the earth was covered in ice, Raven - the creator - decided to change the earth to a beautiful green land. But as a reminder of when the world was pure and clean, covered with snow and ice, Raven went among the black bear people and turned every tenth bear white.

Raven promised that these unique bears would have unique powers: they would lead special people to special places and have the ability to dive deep in the ocean in search of fish. Raven then set aside a rainforest home for the bears where he decreed that they would live forever in peace and harmony." (Taken from the 'Spirit Bear Youth Coalition' website).

Grizzly Bear with Salmon

Grizzlies Galore - grab a 2008 place!

Canada is also the destination to head to for the wonder of viewing Grizzly Bears in action as they grab at the spawning salmon to fatten up for the winter months ahead. In fact, one of our Festival extensions included an option to do just that. This spectacular wildlife vista is happening as I write and, needless to say, all this years places have been accounted for, but why not get ahead of the game and book your space for the 2008 season - places don't hang around for long! Not only will you encounter huge Grizzly Bears but also the potential of Orcas, Bald Eagles, Porpoises, Dolphins and even Humpback Whales.

Verreaux's Sifaka

More in Madagascar

For those of you who enjoyed the delights of this years Festival, or for those who sadly missed out, a few places are still available for next years adventure on the enchanting island of Madagascar. A somewhat different, but no less exciting, rainforest experience awaits us at two completely different locations this time; the wonders of lemurs and other endemic species at Andasibe Mantadia National Park followed by the dry forest, beach-side luxury of Anjajavy Reserve for reptiles, numerous birds, and different lemur species - some which sit directly outside the villas for some great photo opportunities!

Polar Bears at Nanuk Lodge

Ice Wanderers

Ever popular are our trips to see the largest and arguably the most beautiful of the bears - the mighty Polar Bear. These majestic creatures can be viewed at close hand at their summer feeding grounds next to Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge where they wile away the days eating sedge and engaging in tussles before the migration north. Alternatively, if viewing white against white is your preference, then how about a trip to Churchill the 'Polar Bear Capital of the World', where bears can be viewed from lodges and Tundra Buggies as they await the frozen conditions for their journey north. All this years places have been accounted for but book early now for next season for the opportunity of seeing these amazing creatures. (Polar Bear photo courtesy of Mr Charles Kinsey)

Young Tiger

Passage to India

Alternatively, as the cold weather invades the northern European countries, how about heading off to the regal delights and sunshine of India in search of the most majestic of big cats; the tiger. Tiger viewing is optimum between November and the end of April, and there are plenty of prime sites to choose from- why not combine several and include a little sightseeing into your itinerary? Depending on location you may even have the chance of seeing Asiatic Lions, leopards and Indian one-horned Rhinos. Jonathan and Angie Scott also found time to visit India with us earlier this year - click here for their impressions, and for our trips to India...
