At 60,000 hectares, the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve is one of the largest privately owned reserves in South Africa and supports an abundance of iconic African species and incredible safari lodges.
Formed in 1969 when 36 farm owners came together with the sole focus of conserving the area’s flora and fauna, Klaserie was officially declared a nature reserve in 1972. This vast reserve dropped its fences with Kruger National Park in 1994, allowing the wildlife to travel without boundaries between Klaserie and the national park, creating a greater free-flowing ecosystem.

The birdlife is abundant with over 350 recorded species including southern ground hornbill, saddle-billed stork, African paradise flycatcher, scarlet-chested sunbird and Kori bustard. The reserve acts as a primary breeding area for the critically endangered white-backed vulture and other species of vulture can often be seen circling overhead when carcasses are present such as lappet-faced, white-faced and hooded vultures.
