Safari Holidays in Mozambique
After more than two decades of devastating internal conflict, Mozambique is once again rising from the ashes to reclaim its rightful spot as the ultimate beach and bush travel destination in southern Africa. The parks and reserves, which were once home to huge populations of buffalo and wildebeest, elephant and antelope, are now being restored to their former glory. National parks like Gorongosa and Limpopo, the Maputo Elephant Reserve, Niassa Reserve and a handful of others, are all finding ways to reintroduce wildlife, control poaching, restore balance between man and the environment, and generally get Mozambique's big-name parks back to the state they were in.

Gorongosa National Park is a largish park (some 4,000 square kilometres) that was ravaged during the 30 years of the Mozambique civil war but which has recently been the recipient of a vast amount of funding from a private charitable foundation in the USA called the Carr Foundation (www.carrfoundation.org). The objective of the Carr Foundation is to get the park back on its feet, to restore the wildlife levels, and to encourage an increased number of (low impact) tourists to the area in order to enable the area to support the local economy.
