Ecuador & Galapagos
Ecuador's extensive range of habitats supports an outstanding variety of species, including over 25,000 species of vascular plants, 1500 bird species, and 300 species of mammal - a naturalist's paradise! Meanwhile 13 major islands, 6 minor islands, and 42 islets make up the Galapagos archipelago, which sits astride the equator some 1,000 kilometres off-shore. Lichens, mosses, grasses, cacti and shrubs have colonised the soil, whilst small woodlands exist on the higher ground. There are giant Galapagos Tortoises, colourful Land Iguanas, large groups of sea-faring Marine Iguanas and 7 species of Lava Lizards. However, it is the bird colonies that are most conspicuous, with Red, and Blue-footed Booby, Galapagos Hawk, Flightless Cormorant and even a Galapagos Penguin! The nutrient-rich waters around the islands are home to sealions, dolphins, turtles and at certain times of year, whales.
