How to Choose your Greater Kruger National Park Accommodation

A Kruger National Park safari is an unforgettable experience, a destination famed globally as one of Africa’s most outstanding national parks and undoubtably the jewel in South Africa’s safari crown. With such a stellar reputation and an area that's comparable to Wales in size, it's no surprise that a number of lodges have opened within the park and throughout the private reserves found along Kruger’s western boundary, known as the Greater Kruger National Park. Here, we help you choose the best accommodation option.

Ranging from intimate bush camps to magnificent safari lodges catering to a range of budgets and with easy accessibility, there's something for everyone on offer in the Greater Kruger National Park. The vast size of the park combined with the plentiful options available can seem overwhelming when selecting a place to stay, however this guide has been designed to provide clarity when it comes to choosing your accommodation in this outstanding wilderness area. Additionally, our Quintessential Kruger Safari trip idea offers a detailed look at what to expect each day in the park.

Location

When it comes to wildlife viewing, there's one metric that trumps all - location! A Kruger National Park safari is no different, however with the option of staying in the public areas of the Kruger, staying on a private concession within the park or staying at a private game reserve it can make things confusing. A breakdown of the merits they each offer can be seen below.

Wildlife Viewing Areas

As far as wildlife viewing is concerned, there are fantastic opportunities to see all of the species that Kruger National Park has to offer in any area of the park on exciting game drives, however as a general rule we can divide the park into three sections:

  1. The southern section of the park around Crocodile Bridge Gate, Lower Sabie and Skukuza rest camps is known as the most game dense area of the park and is great for both predators and herbivorous species. Properties found on private concessions in this area include Jock Safari Lodge, Rhino Plains Camp and Rhino Post Safari Lodge.
  2. The central grasslands around Satara rest camp are renowned for big cat sightings. Properties found on private concessions in this area include Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge, Imbali Safari Lodge and Hamiltons Tented Camp.
  3. The Pafuri area in the far north is often described as having the best scenery in the park, with beautiful fever tree forests and impressive gorges however you'll often have to work harder for game viewing. Properties found on private concessions in this area include The Outpost and Pel’s Post.

The private reserves each have their own sparkling reputations as outstanding wildlife destinations, offering some of the best Big Five viewing in Africa along with cheetah, African wild dog and so much more.
